UPDATE: Transitional Policy Extends Rhode Island Rabies Protocol

Until new rules to extend the interval between rabies vaccinations from two to three years in the state of Rhode Island go into effect, Dr. Scott Marshall, the Rhode Island state public health vet has written a transitional policy to protect against unnecessary rabies booster shots.

The state Rabies Control made the decision 10 months ago to align the rabies protocol with national standards set by the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians. But the law to extend the interval to three years has languished amidst procedural delays. A public hearing on the change in rabies control and prevention rules will be held on Monday, March 4. New rules are expected to go into effect about March 16.
